The Artist: Shoji Hamada (1894-1978)

Shoji Hamada was a seminal figure in 20th-century ceramics and a designated Living National Treasure of Japan. As a co-founder of the Mingei (Folk Craft) movement alongside Soetsu Yanagi and Bernard Leach, he transformed the humble pottery village of Mashiko into a world-renowned ceramic center. His work is celebrated not for ornate delicacy, but for its robust, functional beauty and the "healthy" quality of its glazes.

Hamada's philosophy was grounded in the rhythm of the body and the materials of the earth. He famously worked sitting cross-legged at a hand-turned wheel (te-rokuro), producing forms with speed and fluidity. His decoration was equally spontaneous—often applying glaze by dipping, pouring, or using a ladle to create his signature "trailing" patterns.
